Timing right for Test cricket rookie

Peter Handscomb knows his timing couldn't have been any better after scoring 215 a couple of days before the Australian Test cricket side was named.

New Test cricket squad member Peter Handscomb appreciates more than most that timing is everything.

The 25-year-old Victorian was probably already on the selectors radar before the past week.

However, a career-best score of 215 against NSW in an innings spanning almost eight hours, made his claim for this week's Test in Adelaide impossible to overlook, especially given the clamour for new blood after five successive losses.

"It was nice timing,'" Handscomb said.

"A lot of people have messaged me saying timing is everything.'

"It came out nicely and I've been feeling good now for quite a long time and it was good to actually spend time out in the middle.and make a big score."

Handscomb doubles as a wicketkeeper, a skill that would come in handy for Australia, if anything happened to Matthew Wade, who was recalled to the side for the Adelaide Test in place of Peter Nevill.

"I'll chuck them (the keepers' gloves) on mate, if we have to," a laconic Handscomb said.

He said he enjoyed playing at Adelaide Oval and didn't mind batting against the pink ball, having.done so at the venue last season.

'So I'm feeling relatively confident going into this game," he said.

"'Adelaide is always a feisty crowd so I look forward to getting out in front of them.

"It will be nice to have them on my side for a change."
