Tippett stays with Swans in name only

Sydney will select retired ruck-forward Kurt Tippett at the AFL rookie draft but it's an administrative move and not the start of a comeback bid.

Retired ruck-forward Kurt Tippett will remain with Sydney as a rookie in 2019 but he has no plans to revive his AFL career.

Tippett announced his shock retirement in January, citing concerns over a debilitating ankle injury, with three years to run on a lucrative contract.

Given the timing of his announcement, the Swans had to carry Tippett on their primary list for the 2018 season even though he had left the club and had no intention of playing again.

Sydney officially delisted him on Friday in a bid to ease some of the salary cap burden of his deal, but he must remain with the club as a rookie while he continues to be paid.

"In keeping with AFL rules and regulations, it is the club's intention to re-draft Tippett in the upcoming AFL rookie draft so that the club can fulfil the terms of an agreed settlement," a club statement said.

"Tippett ... is not fit for football and has no intention of returning to the AFL.

"With this statement we consider the matter closed. No parties will make any further comment."

Swans football chief Tom Harley raised the possibility of Tippett coming out of retirement in March when Sam Naismith suffered a season-ending knee injury, but that possibility was quickly ruled out.

Tippett was just 30 when he called it quits having struggled to regain full fitness after an ankle reconstruction.

He played 178 AFL games - 104 with Adelaide and 74 with the Swans - after he was taken with the 32nd overall pick at the 2006 national draft.

His contentious switch from the Crows at the end of the 2012 season had far-reaching ramifications.

Tippett was fined $50,000 and slapped with an 11-game suspension, while Adelaide were fined $300,000 and stripped of draft picks after an AFL investigation uncovered salary cap breaches and conduct prejudicial to the draft.
