Titans back Meninga to bring winning vibe

Gold Coast officials expect Mal Meninga's winning ways to rub off on a club desperate for sustained NRL success.

After such success with the Queensland State of Origin team, bringing a winning culture to the Gold Coast may be even easier for Mal Meninga.

That's the hope of Titans executive chairman Dennis Watt, who helped lure the former Queensland centre and coach - and current Australian mentor - to the club.

Meninga will move from Canberra to the Gold Coast, where he will serve as head of performance and culture on a three-year deal in a new role trumpeted as one of the club's most significant.

The former Raiders star captained his side to three titles and set records as a rampaging centre for both Queensland and Australia, before taking on the coaching duties in the nation's capital.

But it was his nine series wins in 10 years as Queensland coach where his ability to cultivate a winning spirit was truly recognised.

"It's about the players' partners and the families; he's very holistic and knows what the game can really do," former Brisbane and Melbourne administrator Watt said.

"In one way it's probably easier (to build that culture), because you're with them every day of every week, where in Origin you're packing it in to a couple of weeks."

Meninga's will be far more than just a token appointment, with the recently inducted Immortal admitting he had plenty to gain from the new role too.

"It fully immerses me in the game that I love," he said.

"And there's a selfish part as well, because I wanted to get back into club land and understand it better than I have in the past."

He says his first job is to listen before he starts barking orders. But he will be involved in all aspects of the club - from recruitment to membership drives.

"You'll certainly see plenty of him," Watt said.

Meninga will prioritise his role with the Kangaroos but not be too distracted by it, given their next Test isn't scheduled until after the 2019 season.

He will begin with the Titans, who returned for preseason training on Monday, immediately, while his wife Amanda and three children make the move north from Canberra.
