Swim star Ariarne Titmus has equalled her Commonwealth record for the women's 400m freestyle.

Titmus won the Australian title on Thursday night in Adelaide in three minutes 59.66 seconds - exactly the same time she clocked at the Pan Pacific Championships last August.

Remarkably, the 18-year-old was competing in Adelaide at the nationals while still in full training and without a taper heading into the meet.

And she had no real competition - Titmus was five seconds in front of the field within 150 metres and eventually won by more than 12 seconds.

"That is pretty crazy to match it," Titmus said of her best time.

"I tried to do the best I can out there by myself, it's a lot tougher.

"As much as I tried my hardest tonight, you can always think if you did have someone there, what would happen."

Titmus earlier at the nationals set a fresh Commonwealth record in the 200m freestyle - all while training solidly for a meet which isn't doubling as a selection trial for the world championships in July.

Australia's world championship team will be decided at a selection meet in Brisbane in June.

"I have raced really well this week, I am really happy with it," Titmus said.

"It has given me a lot of confidence going into the next two months to trials.

"To think what I might be able to do with a rest is really exciting ... hopefully with a taper I can post even faster times."

Other Thursday night title winners included 20-year-old William Yang (men's 50m backstroke), Laura Taylor (women's 200m butterfly) and Loius Townsend (men's 50m breaststroke).
