With that knowledge, Trump moved to Manhattan and embarked on his own business endeavours.

Since then he has acquired some of the most exclusive properties in New York city, including Trump Casino, Trump International Hotel, Trump Marina Hotel and Casino, Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort and Trump Tower.

He was hit hard by the recession in the 1990s and declared bankruptcy when he couldn't repay a $2 billion bank loan.

But, he rebuilt his wealth and is thought to be worth an estimate $1.6 billion.

Since his destitute days, he has written numerous books and established an online business university.

Trump, who has always been a recognisable figure in New York, achieved international fame when he began starring in the reality TV show, The Apprentice, from 2004.

In 2007, he claimed his spot on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Three years later, he expressed a desire to run as a Republican candidate in the 2012 presidential elections.

His most controversial move during this period was to repeatedly call for President Barack Obama to present his birth certificate to prove he was an American citizen.

The year before the election, Trump announced he wouldn't run for the presidency because he didn't want to compromise his business ventures.

Trump has five children to three women.

His oldest, Donald Trump Jr, is 36 and his youngest, Barron Trump, is just eight.
