Todd Astle earns Black Caps recall

One-Test legspinner Todd Astle has been included in New Zealand's squad for the Twenty20 home series against Pakistan, replacing Ish Sodhi in one of two changes.

Matt Henry replaces an injured Tim Southee (foot), as questions mount over the accomplished seamer's availability when Australia tour in February.

Soon-to-retire skipper Brendon McCullum is omitted once again, leaving Kane Williamson in the captaincy role he will fulfil at the World Twenty20 in March.

Batsman Tom Latham has been included for Friday's first game in Auckland only. He will make way for the final two games for Ross Taylor, who is rested for the opener.

Astle, 29, is poised to make an international limited overs debut as coach Mike Hesson considers his spinning options for the two-yearly tournament in India.

The Cantabrian's Test was against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2012, when he returned match figures of 1-97.

Impressive domestic form with ball and bat has prompted the recall.

"Todd has been a consistent performer for Canterbury over a number of seasons," Hesson said.

"With the spin-friendly conditions we're likely to play in during the ICC World Twenty20, it's important we have all of our bases covered and Todd is certainly an option for us."

Astle's promotion was helped by the unavailability of experienced limited overs spinner Nathan McCullum, who is still sidelined with a knee injury. He is expected to return to domestic cricket next week.

Southee's bruising to the bone of his left foot is more serious than first suspected, leaving him in doubt for the three one-day internationals and two Tests against Australia in February.

Bowling coach Dimitri Mascarenhas says the 2-0 win over Sri Lanka was encouraging but they will have their hands full against a Pakistan side boasting a particularly live pace bowling group - mostly comprising left-armers.

The home side will focus primarily on winning the series rather than preparing for the World Twenty20.

"Pakistan are going to be a really tough team to beat and if we're trying to plan ahead, we're going get wiped off the park," Mascarenhas said.

NZ TWENTY20 SQUAD:

Kane Williamson (capt), Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Tom Latham/Ross Taylor, Corey Anderson, Grant Elliott, Mitchell Santner, Luke Ronchi, Todd Astle, Matt Henry, Adam Milne, Mitchell McClenaghan, Trent Boult.
