A three-year-old boy has died in a "tragic accident" after a ute hit him in the driveway of a home near the Victorian-NSW border.

The boy died in the Robinvale hospital shortly after he was taken there in a critical condition on Monday afternoon, police say.

Images on the Nine Network show a ute in the driveway of the Cramp Road home where the boy was hit about 4.20pm.

"The incident is being treated as a tragic accident," police spokesman Alistair Parsons said in a statement on Tuesday.
