Tokyo propose venue changes as costs mount

A major cost blowout has forced Tokyo 2020 Olympic organisers to consider moving some events as far as 400km away.

Japanese authorities reviewing the cost of hosting the 2020 Olympic Games will propose major changes for three planned venues as costs mount.

Local media says some venues will be moved 400km from the capital, after recently elected Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike ordered a review of ballooning Olympic costs.

The proposed changes would require the approval of the International Olympic Committee and each sport's international federation.

Tokyo's bid proposal had promised the majority of venues would be within 8km of the Olympic Village in the city centre.

The panel is reportedly recommending that the construction of three venues - for volleyball, swimming, and rowing and canoe sprint - be reconsidered, with other existing locations to host those events.

The rowing and canoeing venue is to be moved due to soaring costs and because not enough measures had been taken against wind and waves at the site.

Tokyo has already shifted the venues for several events out of the capital, including sailing, cycling and basketball.
