Tom Mitchell's best AFL matches of 2018

Three of the best games from Brownlow Medal winner Tom Mitchell's outstanding 2018 AFL season.

Tom Mitchell's best three performances in his Brownlow Medal-winning year.

ONE VOTE: Rd 18 v Carlton - 46 disposals, nine marks, nine tackles, two goals

What better chance for Mitchell to fill his boots than against the rabble of Carlton? The onballer did as he pleased against a Blues side that managed just one goal to halftime. Hawthorn secured a crushing 72-point victory, the first in a six-game winning streak that propelled them to a top-four finish.

TWO VOTES: Rd 1 v Collingwood - 54 disposals, 27 contested possessions, nine clearances, eight inside-50s

Possessions aren't everything. But when you break the AFL record for most disposals, people tend to sit up and take notice. Magpies coach Nathan Buckley sent no fewer than three different opponents to Mitchell after his hot first quarter. It wasn't enough to stop him racking up 54 touches as Hawthorn launched their season with a 34-point win.

THREE VOTES: Rd 2 v Geelong - 40 disposals, 13 clearances, nine inside-50s, two goals

Possibly a contentious choice given his record-breaking performance a week earlier. But this time Mitchell was matched up against Geelong's "holy trinity" - Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood and Gary Ablett - in their first outing together since Ablett's return to Kardinia Park. Mitchell outshone them all, booting two pivotal goals as the Hawks prevailed by a point in an Easter Monday thriller.
