Bernard Tomic has cruised into the second round of qualifying for Wimbledon with a 7-6 (7-1) 6-3 win over Italian Matteo Donati at the Bank of England sports club in London.

The former world No.17 is playing qualifiers for the All England Championships for the first time since 2011 when he made it all the way to the quarter-finals as an 18-year-old.

Tomic's appearance at Wimbledon last year earned him a $20,000 fine for admitting he feigned injury and was "a little bored" during his first-round loss to Mischa Zverev.

He is looking to qualify for back-to-back grand slam main draws after winning three matches at Roland Garros last month before crashing out in the opening round.

The 25-year-old will now take on Tomislav Brkic, who ousted Australian Akira Santillan 6-3 7-6 (9-7) for a spot in the last round of qualifying.

Thanasi Kokkinakis' path to the second round was less comfortable with the South Australian, who beat Roger Federer just two months ago, coming from a set down to see off Italy's Marcelo Arevalo.

Kokkinakis showed great resilience to dig deep and pull off a 3-6 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 victory.

The 23-year-old, who admitted recently he'd flirted with the idea of quitting due to nearly three years of injury woes, will now meet Polish world No.192 Kamil Majchrzak.

It was a similar arm wrestle for countryman Alex Bolt who overcame Quentin Halys 7-6 (7-3) 3-6 6-3 to set up a clash with Britain's Alex Ward in round two.

Jason Kubler also advanced, beating Arthur de Greef of Belgium 6-1 6-2 and will face Adam Pavlesek for a place in a round three decider.

Queensland left-hander John Patrick Smith is also through after outlasting Belarussian Uladzimir Ignatik 6-7 (7-5) 6-1 8-6.

But Marc Polmans failed to advance, losing to Germany's Matthias Bachinger in three sets.
