Bernard Tomic's latest attempt to rejoin the ATP Tour's elite has fallen at the first hurdle at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Rhode Island.
Tomic won his spot in the main draw with qualifying victories over Austin Krajicek and Alessandro Bega before facing Dudi Sela in the first round, where he lost 6-3 1-6 6-2.
Both the Queenslander and Sela registered five aces each, but the Israelian dominated on his first serve winning 85 per cent of the points.
Joinining Tomic on the way out were fellow countrymen Alex Bolt and Alex de Minaur.
The 25-year-old from Murray Bridge was beaten 6-3 4-6 7-5 by American Christian Harrison in three tight sets.
Tournament No.7 seed de Minaur was involved in a titanic battle with Ivo Karlovic before being upset by the Croat, 6-7 (7-2) 7-6 (7-3) 7-5.
Karlovic used his serve to good effect when he sent down 19 aces to de Minaur's five and won 85 per cent of points on his first serve.
