Tomljanovic loses first round in Tianjin

Ajla Tomljanovic's Tianjin Open campaign is over at the first hurdle while Jelena Ostapenko was a surprise first-round loser at the WTA event in Hong Kong.

Ajla Tomljanovic has been beaten by Hsieh Su-wei in the WTA's Tianjin Open while Jelena Ostapenko was a surprise first-round casualty at the Hong Kong Open.

Australian world No.46 Tomljanovic pushed the fifth-seeded Su-wei in both sets but the Taiwanese won the important points in the 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 encounter on Monday.

Top seed Karolina Pliskova was made to work hard before she overcame American Varvara Lepchenko 6-2 6-7 (3-7) 6-3.

Croatian sixth seed Petra Martic required a third-set tiebreaker to edge past home hope Ying-Ying Duan 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-3).

Others to progress to the second round in China were Magda Linette, Veronika Kudermetova, Fangzhou Liu and Polona Hercog.

In Hong Kong, Latvian third seed Ostapenko - the 2017 French Open champion -was beaten 5-7 6-3 6-2 by world No.317 Kristina Kucova of Slovakia.

Eighth-seeded Frenchwoman Alize Cornet had no such trouble, powering to a 6-1 6-2 win over Julia Glushko.

There were also first-round wins for Luksika Kumkhum, Dayana Yastremska and Viktoriya Tomova.
