Tomljanovic, Stosur suffer Doha exits

Australians Ajla Tomljanovic and Samantha Stosur have been been knocked out of the WTA Qatar Open in Doha.

Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic has been knocked out of the Qatar Open after losing in straight sets to Germany's Julia Goerges.

World No.41 Tomljanovic - Australia's second-highest ranked player behind Ashleigh Barty - had made the main draw by accounting for Polona Hercog 6-3 6-4 in the qualifying round.

But ninth seed Goerges wasted little time in booking her place in round two, dropping just four games and firing off 26 winners to tee up a clash with Slovenia's Polona Hercog, who beat American Alison Riske 6-4 6-3 to advance.

Tomljanovic's fellow Australian Samantha Stosur, who had replaced Caroline Wozniacki in the main draw as a lucky loser, fell at the first hurdle after a 6-4 6-2 defeat to Czech qualifier Karolina Muchova.

World no.10 Wozniacki withdrew from the tournament due to a "viral illness", according to a statement from tournament organisers.

Former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko overcame Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu to book her place in the second round with a 6-1 4-6 6-2 victory.

Latvian Ostapenko was more consistent on the day as she avenged a second-round loss to Buzarnescu in Doha 12 months ago, sealing victory in an hour and 45 minutes.

Ostapenko, who won the French Open in 2017, will next face world No.7 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.

Dutch fifth seed Kiki Bertens recovered from a nightmare opening set to beat Italian Camila Giorgi 0-6 7-6 (9-7) 6-4.

Latvia's seventh seed Anastasija Sevastova suffered a shock opening round exit as she was beaten 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 by Russian qualifier Anna Blinkova.
