It's customary for the Prime Minister of Australia to appear at a Grand Final game to congratulate players. But things took an unexpected turn for PM Tony Abbott after last night's NRL match between champions South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Canterbury Bulldogs.
As the Prime Minister was introduced in the post-game ceremony, the crowd quickly reacted with a tremendous chorus of boos, obviously unimpressed with his presence.
But Mr Abbott weathered the moment with a smile and waved back to the crowd.
Meanwhile, Australian Rugby League Commission chairman John Grant saw the humour in the moment, laughing right through and into the announcement of the other officials present.
Mr Abbott wasn’t the only one to cop an embarrassing reception from footy fans. US soft rock band Train were reportedly blasted with a chorus of disapproval as well.
The group played a medley of their hits including Drops of Jupiter and Hey Soul Sister as well as their latest single Angel in Blue Jeans throughout which the boos from the audience were very audible.
