The federal government has failed to gain any traction in the latest Newspoll despite its burst of policy outcomes in health, border protection and climate change.

The poll, published in The Australian on Tuesday, shows Labor maintaining the same two-party preferred vote - of 44 per cent - that they had in July.

Julia Gillard has lost a percentage point as preferred Prime Minister - coming in at 39 per cent after polling at 40 per cent last month.

Forty-one per cent of those polled listed Tony Abbott as preferred Prime Minister compared to 40 per cent last month while his party maintained 56 per cent of the two-party preferred vote.

Satisfaction with Ms Gillard's performance rose by a single percentage point to 33 per cent while the percentage of people dissatisfied with her performance dropped a point to 58 per cent.

Thirty-nine per cent of respondents were satisfied with Mr Abbott's performance while 52 per cent were dissatisfied.
