Tony Abbott spent more than $120,000 taxpayeR money on travel last year, as he campaigned to get colleagues re-elected and spent time in Indigenous communities.

Former prime minister Tony Abbott racked up a taxpayer-funded travel bill of more than $120,000 last year, out-spending his three predecessors combined.

Mr Abbott splurged almost $74,000 on domestic flights in 2016 - nearly double the average of all MPs - and more than several ministers.

His spokesman told News Corp Mr Abbott spent much of last year's federal election campaign supporting the re-election of colleagues and also travelled to indigenous communities and regional Australia.
