Tony Abbott's sister and vocal marriage equality campaigner Christine Forster is getting married to her long-term partner at a ceremony in Sydney.

Ms Forster and her partner of 10 years, Virginia Edwards, both said they were "very excited" to be tying the knot with the former prime minister's sister telling reporters on Friday "it's been a long time coming".

The City of Sydney councillor played a prominent role in the campaign for same-sex marriage which was legalised after 62 per cent of participants in a national postal survey backed the move in mid-November.

Meanwhile her brother, Mr Abbott, was a staunch opponent of same-sex marriage.

As the couple made their way to the ceremony, Ms Forster told reporters she was "very excited and happy".

"It's been a long time coming. We are running a little bit behind schedule," she said.

Ms Edwards added: "Thank you for all of your support. It's marvellous."

Mr Abbott was among the guests and arrived with wife Margie for the ceremony overlooking the Sydney Opera House.

"It's a great family occasion, very happy for Chris and Virginia. I'm looking forward to having a new sister-in-law," he said.
