Top 10: Carbon, carbon and pastafarianism

Carbon kept popping up in this week's most popular articles, but an Austrian pastafarian and a woman on a penis-lopping rampage got their turns too.

Carbon's not really the kind of substance one expects to pop, but it kept popping up in this week's most popular articles.

But our audiences still found time out of their undoubtedly busy schedules to read about an Austrian pastafarian and a woman on a penis-lopping rampage too.

As the PM finally released all the details of 'Australia's carbon future' - oddly enough on a Sunday night - readers flocked to our look at carbon taxes around the world presumably to see how we'll be stacking up.

Next-hottest was New Zealand's dramatic shutting-of-the-door on a boat-load of asylum seekers - a reminder of the painful issue that's never far from the thoughts of all kinds of Aussies.

And speaking of people of all kinds, there it was in number three; the Austrian (note the missing 'al') pastafarian who gained the right to be have his driver's licence photo taken while wearing a colander - the religious garb of believers in the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Anyway, what do YOU think of the carbon tax? After disappearing for two items, the thorny little element popped up again, this time in the form of a discussion board.

A little Schadenfreude took fifth place, with readers enjoying a gallery of Tour de France crashes. Gruesome stuff.

Oh no - carbon again in sixth - spoiling the chance for a nice segue from the 'gruesome' stuff of the TdF spills to the REALLY gruesome yarn of a woman who cut off her husband's penis and put it down the in-sink-erator so he knew it was never coming back.

In eighth spot, amazingly, there was our factbox on the carbon tax, which is odd, because the topic does tend to put a significant proportion of ordinary people to sleep.

But not you, our informed and engaged SBS audiences!

You clicked the story of South Sudan's ecstasy at its long-awaited independence into ninth place, and your compassionate hearts still had time to read about the UN's call for help with Africa's horrific drought.
