The 93-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II is notorious for putting his foot in it and has hit the headlines on countless occasions for remarks targeting women, deaf people and an unsuspecting car-park attendant who the prince branded a "bloody silly fool".

We take a look back at some of his greatest hits.

"I would get arrested if I unzipped that dress" Speaking to 25-year-old Hannah Jackson, who was wearing a red dress with a zip down the front, during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee tour in London in 2012.

"Do you still throw spears at each other?" To Aboriginal leader Ivan Brim on a visit to Australia in 2002.

"You look as if you're ready for the bed." Greeting the Nigerian secretary-general of the Commonwealth, who was wearing ceremonial robes for a state dinner.

"Are we going to need ear plugs?"  After being told Madonna was going to sing the "Die another Day" theme song in 2002.

"Do you work in a strip club?" To Navy sea cadet trainer Elizabeth Rendle in 2010.

"Well, you didn’t design your beard too well, did you?" To a Buckingham Palace guest who was sporting a goatee and said he worked as a designer (2009).

"It looks as if it was put in by an Indian." Reaction to a fuse box he saw at a factory in Scotland in 1999.

"Deaf? If you are near there, no wonder you are deaf." Speaking to a group of deaf children standing next to a steel drum band in Wales in 1999.

"If you stay here much longer, you'll all be slitty-eyed." Speaking to British exchange students in Beijing in 1986.

"You can't have been here long, you haven't got a pot belly." Speaking to a Briton living in Hungary in 1993.
