Territorians are bracing for more wild weather as floodwaters threaten to cut off more remote communities in the Top End.
Heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding is forecast over parts of the Daly and Gregory Districts as a deep tropical low combines with an active monsoon, the Bureau of Meteorology says.
Damaging wind gusts up to 90 km/h are also possible, with extreme weather tipped to persist for another few days before easing.
There's a five to 20 per cent chance of a cyclone developing on Wednesday, which drops to less than five per cent on Thursday and Friday.
Widespread showers and storms with daily totals of up to 100mm were expected across the western Top End, bureau senior forecaster Angeline Prasad said.
"(This) could lead to flash flooding and may cause road and causeway conditions to deteriorate quickly," she said.
As river levels continue to rise a flood watch remains current for the Bonaparte and North West Coastal Rivers including the Katherine region.
Ms Prasad said this could cause some communities to become isolated.
Access to the remote communities of Wadeye, Peppimenarti and Yarralin has been blocked and police had to drop supplies by helicopter to Lingara.
Several motorists have been bogged in the bush and one driver was left stranded on the roof of his car after attempting to cross floodwaters in Marrakai, southeast of Darwin.
Catchments likely to swell over the next few days include the Victoria, Adelaide and Daly Rivers.
Ms Prasad says heavy rainfall should ease in the western Top End and Gregory District from Thursday as the tropical low moves towards the Kimberley in WA.
"Although some monsoonal showers and storms may continue in the north," she said.
