The top portrait painters for 2012 - as seen through the eyes of the Art Gallery of NSW - have been named in Sydney.

The Packing Room Prize went to Raelene Sharp for her portrait of veteran actor John Wood, while the overall winner will be announced on March the 30th.

Stencil artist Luke Cornish, also known as E.L.K., has become the first stencil artist to have work hung on the gallery's walls for the prestigious prize.
