Top snow weekend for Vic alpine region

Ski conditions in Victoria's alpine regions are top notch as snow continues to fall thick and fast in sub-zero temperatures.

Victoria's alpine areas are in optimal skiing condition as snow continues to fall thickly, temperatures remain sub-zero and wind is mild.

This weekend is shaping up to be the best in what has been an excellent winter, Mt Hotham Ski Co told AAP on Saturday morning.

"It's a really beautiful winter wonderland up here at the moment," spokesperson Hannah Beard said.

The popular ski resort in the state's alpine region has maintained a two-metre snow base through for two seasons in a row, something that hasn't happened for about 15 years.

A resident in Dinner Plain, 10km from Mt Hotham, told AAP sub-zero temperatures meant snow was able to accumulate from day to day - something he hadn't seen for years.

"The snow is staying here and it's getting bigger and bigger," Karl Gray said.

"It started in the wee hours this morning coming in quite hard."

Mr Gray described cars submerged and snow sitting heavily on rooves and trees.

The State Emergency Service said it was not especially busy overnight but was keeping a close lookout if conditions become more extreme over the weekend.

As a cold front passes over eastern Victoria on Saturday, the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast a maximum of 14 with a high chance of showers for Melbourne.
