The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of a possible tornado to strike in Kurnell, southern Sydney, as a dangerous thunderstorm is set to sweep across the city.
Radar readings this morning detected very dangerous thunderstorms near Sydney Airport and Maroubra. Heavy rainfall is also set to hit the CBD.
Other areas likely to be affected are Sydney Harbour Bridge, Olympic Park in Homebush, and waters off Bondi Beach in the eastern suburbs.
Destructive winds, large hailstones and very heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding are likely, with Hornsby, Ryde and Terrey Hills also to be affected.
Kurnell has already felt the impacts of the severe weather, with wind gusts greater than 200 kilometres and hour recorded.
The State Emergency Service (SES) has advised residents in affected areas to immediately move their cars under cover or away from trees, secure or put away loose items around homes and balconies, and keep clear of fallen power lines, storm drains and creeks.
The SES has also recommended people not to walk, ride bikes or drive through flood water, and to stay indoors away from windows.
The next warning will be issued within the hour.
