Shane Roy Jones, 42, and Kevin Lawrence Roberts, 44, fronted the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday charged with acts intended to disfigure, deprivation of liberty, assault and torture.

The pair were accused of burning the victim's arms, legs, hands and face following an argument at Gladstone Rd in Highgate Hill on Saturday night.

Jones' lawyer, Alex Jones, told the court his client only knew the alleged victim because he lived in the same complex as his co-accused.

Alex Jones said the trio were drinking together and everything was "cordial".

His client allegedly left the premises for about 20 minutes and when he returned the mood had changed and an altercation ensued.

Mr Jones said Shane Jones accepted the aerosol can and lighter was used, but it was only briefly and not over three hours as the victim alleged.

"He accepts it extended beyond a bit of fun," he told the court on Saturday.

Alex Jones said it was Roberts who burned the victim, and his client denied giving him a "clip around the head" or preventing him from leaving.

"This is clearly a matter that is going to be contested," he said, referring to the "significant differences" between his version of events and that of the victim's.

However the police prosecutor said the various burns to the 64-year-old's body appeared to corroborate his story that the torture occurred over several hours.

The court heard Shane Jones had a criminal history that spanned 15 pages and he was currently serving a suspended sentence for sexual offences against children.

He was remanded in custody, while Roberts decided not to apply for bail.

The pair will return to court on May 22.
