Total fire ban for parts of Vic

Hot, dry and windy conditions are forecast for Saturday in some parts of Victoria, with Emergency Services issuing a total fire ban.

A total fire ban has been issued for parts of Victoria as the state braces for high temperatures and strong winds.

Severe fire danger has been forecast for Mallee, Northern Country and North Central districts and the remainder of Victoria, except for East Gippsland, can expect very high fire danger.

Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley said there will be hot, dry and windy conditions and if fires start and take hold, they may be uncontrollable.

"February is traditionally our most dangerous, in a fire sense, because it is when the state is most dry and when fires can do serious damage," Mr Lapsley said on Friday.

He said while there had been some rain across the state, many parts remained dry.

Total Fire Bans have been declared in the Mallee, Northern Country, North East and North Central districts on Saturday.

That means campfires cannot be lit and solid and liquid fuel barbecues and ovens are also banned.
