An extreme fire danger warning has been issued for Port Hedland, with temperatures tipped to hit 40C on Sunday.

A total fire ban has been issued for Port Hedland as the Pilbara faces extreme fire danger conditions.

Temperatures are tipped to hit 40C on Sunday, with winds hitting up to 35km/h in the middle of the day.

Residents have to avoid any activities that could start a fire or face $25,000 fines and 12 months in jail.
