Touk Miller keen to repay AFL Suns' faith

Still buzzing after an off-season trip for the ages, potential Gold Coast captain Touk Miller says it would be rude not to seek an extension with the AFL club.

The midfielder and keen surfer is off contract at the end of 2019 but in talks to extend and avoid the dramas associated with the off-season departures of co-captains Tom Lynch and Steven May.

Miller joined teammates Harrison Wigg and Lachie Weller on a trip to the world's warmest waters in Sumatra last October and is one of many Suns who can be spotted on local breaks when not playing football.

A contender to fill the vacant captaincy post, Miller is happy on the Gold Coast and, following the five-year extensions of David Swallow and Jarrod Witts, can see the merits of an early extension.

"They gave me the opportunity to play AFL and live my dream. I think it'd be rude of me not to pay the respect by giving my loyalty to them as well," the 22-year-old said.

Lynch's future at the club dominated discussion last year before he and May eventually headed south.

Miller was among the players to make his feelings known about Lynch's decision to meet mid-season with other clubs and has since described that episode as a "line in the sand" moment for the club.

"From a club image perspective it'd be fantastic with myself signing on and retaining players is a big thing for us going forward," he said.

"You can't build a team with the players that are left from when I arrived."

Coach Stuart Dew suggested Miller and fellow leadership group members Swallow, Witts and Pearce Hanley would be captaincy frontrunners and that he had no concerns about Miller's long-term commitment.

An off-season overhaul has resulted in 13 fresh faces at the club, leaving Dew comfortable with the resources at his disposal.

"I think we've gained some talent through the draft and it depends on your definition of talent but you've got to have the right character to bring out the talent," he said.
