Tourist rescued, NT family still missing

A foreign tourist has been rescued after a car was washed away by floodwaters in central Australia, but there are concerns for a family who are still missing.

A foreign tourist who was trapped in a car as it was washed away by floodwaters in central Australia has escaped with only minor injuries.

Two men and a woman were inside the small sedan when it was swept downstream at the Hugh River around 1pm local time on Tuesday.

The driver and another passenger managed to escape but the third person was trapped as the vehicle was washed off the causeway on Larrapinta Drive into the Hugh River.

Acting Superintendent Brendan Muldoon told reporters in Darwin that officers launched a search after the vehicle disappeared.

"We're told by witnesses it rolled over a couple of times and was wedged up against a tree," he said.

All the people involved have now been found and are being treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Police still have grave concerns for six people and an infant who have been missing in central Australia for more than 48 hours.

The group set off in two cars from the Kiwirrkurra Community in WA's Gibson Desert on Christmas Day.

They never arrived at their destination of Kintore, around 180km away in NT, and have not been heard from since then.

Search efforts have been hampered by the extreme weather, with police hoping to carry out an aerial search of the area now that conditions have improved.

"This section of Australia is extremely remote, there's no phone reception," Supt Muldoon said.

"We believe they are from a remote indigenous community, we're not sure what resources they have.

"We're seriously concerned for their welfare and are putting all our efforts to making sure we get out there as soon as we can," he added.

The severe weather that led to the temporary closure of Uluru this week has eased, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

But authorities are still dealing with the aftermath of flooding.
