Towns misses 1st NBA game after car crash

Minnesota Timberwolves centre Karl-Anthony Towns will miss the first game of his NBA after he was involved in a minor car accident.

Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns is in concussion protocol after a car accident and will miss a game for the first time in his NBA career.

The All-Star was involved in a car accident on his way to the airport to catch the team's flight to New York on Thursday.

The accident led to Towns missing the flight and he later took a commercial flight to New York, after being cleared to travel, and arrived in New York.

After further examination he was placed in the concussion protocol and ruled out for Friday's game against the Knicks.

Minnesota interim coach Ryan Saunders told the assembled media in his pre-game session that Towns, who missed the team's morning shootaround, was back at the team hotel getting rest.

Towns had started all 303 games since being the No.1 pick in the 2015 draft, the longest streak to begin a career since 1970-71.

Back-up point guard Tyus Jones said he saw Towns prior to Friday's shootaround and that Towns was doing "all right."

Towns is averaging 23.1 points and 12.0 rebounds this season and has recorded 37 double-doubles, including nine in his past 12 games.
