NSW has recorded its first case of the destructive cropping pest, the Russian wheat aphid, in the state's south.
Biosecurity officials with the NSW Department of Primary Industries confirmed the case in a sample from the Barham area in the Murray region.
It comes after a national management group declared the pest endemic and unlikely to be eradicated in June following detections in South Australia and Victoria.
NSW grain growers are being encouraged to contact their agronomist or seek advice from the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) or Local Land Services for information on how to manage the pest in cereal crops.
"There are tools available to help manage the aphid, including an emergency use permit for specific chemicals that has been issued by the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicines Authority," DPI director of plant biosecurity Satendra Kumar said in a statement on Tuesday.
"To limit the spread of the pests and diseases hygiene is important," he said.
"It is important to put best practice biosecurity measures into place to reduce the risk of transport on clothing, footwear, vehicles and machinery when moving between paddocks and farm".
