Toxic liquor kills 10 people in India

At least 10 people have died after consuming illegal alcohol in eastern India with police warning the death toll could rise.

At least 10 people have died and 30 taken to hospital after consuming illegal alcohol in eastern India.

Villagers in West Bengal state's Midnapore district fell ill after drinking the alcohol on the weekend.

Many were listed in critical condition, and the death toll could rise further, police said.

Fifteen suspects were arrested, most of those involved in the supply of illicit liquor. Samples were sent to labs to be analysed.

The illegal liquor trade thrives in India, because it is much cheaper than commercially produced alcohol. In June, more than 100 people died after consuming toxic liquor in Mumbai.
