Toyota Australia has moved ahead with a recall on four models following an announcement from its headquarters in Japan that it is recalling 1.53 million vehicles globally.
More than 17,500 Toyota Klugers and 8200 Lexus models are involved in the Australian recall, announced on Friday afternoon.
The majority of vehicles need to be fixed for a problem with the brake-master cylinder which could lead to weaker braking power.
Toyota Australia said there had been 77 cases reported in the country but no one had been injured.
"This safety recall is a preventative action," a company statement said.
"Owners can continue to drive their vehicle when the brake warning light is not illuminated.
"If the brake warning light illuminates, the brake master cylinder fluid level should be checked and filled. Vehicles should then be presented to dealers for inspection."
The recall impacts Kluger models produced between May 2003 and November 2005 and Lexus models RX 330, IS 250 and GS 300 made primarily in 2005.
Toyota Australia will contact all affected owners in the coming days.
The Australian recalls come as the world's largest carmaker announced it is recalling cars in the United States, Japan, Europe, China and other Asian nations.
Toyota has been hit by a string of recalls in recent years involving millions of vehicles.
