Toyota decision a sad day: Aust VP

Toyota Australia's chief operating officer Dave Buttner says he shares the sadness of the company's workforce as it stops making cars locally.

As Toyota's workforce feel the heartbreak of losing their jobs, the company's Australian chief operating officer says he shares their sadness.

"As a 26-year employee with Toyota, I'm feeling very sad today," Toyota Australia executive vice president Dave Buttner said after the company announced it will stop building cars locally by the end of 2017.

Mr Buttner said Toyota workers had put in a significant effort over the past 50 years to create a very good manufacturing plant at Altona.

However, he said Monday's decision was based on the medium to long-term environment the industry was facing.

He said the company's job now was to transition the company in a professional manner and help its employees move to the next phase of their lives.
