Car giant Toyota has already announced a recall of its flagship Prius hybrid in Japan, but questions remain unanswered about its decision in Australia.

Toyota says it will inform the Transport Ministry it is recalling the Prius gas-electric hybrid that went on sale last year.

The recall will include two other hybrid models - the Lexus HS250h sedan and the Sai, which is sold only in Japan.

But while certain models are being recalled in Japan, there's no confirmation on whether Toyota Australia will be recalling Prius models.

A request had been made to Toyota Australia however they didn't return SBS's call.

Some 8-million Toyotas have been recalled since October last year to fix a faulty accelerator pedal and potentially pedal jamming mats.

Toyota, which in 2008 dethroned General Motors as the world's biggest car maker, has seen its brand image badly hurt by its handling of recalls affecting more than its entire 2009 global sales of 7.8 million vehicles.

The company said on Monday that it had resumed production in North America of several models whose sales were suspended over sticking accelerator pedals.
