TPP countries aiming for November deal

The 11 remaining countries participating in the Trans-Pacific Partnership meet in Sydney this week with the aim of a deal being secured by November.

Australia will be hosting senior officials from 11 countries with the aim of securing a major trade agreement spanning the Pacific this year.

The remaining 11 countries involved in the Trans-Pacific Partnership, after US President Donald Trump pulled out earlier this year, will meet in Sydney on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Australian Trade Minister Steven Ciobo said he has been engaging regularly with his TPP ministerial counterparts and there is a broad desire to bring a deal into force at the APEC Leaders meeting in November in Vietnam.

A previous meeting of participating members met in Japan in July.

"The agreement would deliver access to new markets for our farmers, services suppliers and goods exporters," Mr Ciobo said in a statement.

"It would drive trade and investment in our region, and contribute to our economic growth and create new jobs."

He said the TPP includes four of the world's top 20 economies with a combined GDP of $12.4 trillion.

It would result in 19 free-trade agreements among the group and for Australia it would mean FTAs with Canada, Mexico and Peru.
