Better trade arrangements and regional security should be at the top of the agenda at this weekend's East Asia Summit, federal Labor leader Bill Shorten says.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will on Saturday join world leaders including US President Barack Obama and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in Kuala Lumpur for the EAS and an ASEAN meeting.

"We'd like to see better trade, greater engagement between Australia and East Asia and South East Asia (and) of course, regional security has to be top of the list, too," Mr Shorten told reporters in Brisbane on Saturday.
