Tragedy still hurting theme park industry

Village Roadshow expects a fall in earnings from Movie World, Sea World and Wet'n'Wild, as the fatal Dreamworld accident continues to impact the industry.

Village Roadshow says last year's fatal accident at rival Ardent Leisure's Dreamworld is still significantly hitting visitor numbers and earnings at its own theme parks, even in Sydney.

Village Roadshow owns Movie World, Sea World and Wet'n'Wild, and said on Tuesday it expects full-year earnings from its theme parks to be about $55 million, down from $88 million in the 2015/16 financial year.

The company has previously said the number of locals visiting its theme parks on the Gold Coast and Wet'n'Wild Sydney have fallen significantly since the fatalities at Dreamworld in October.

Village Roadshow said on Tuesday it expects to take a pre-tax impairment of about $65 million on the carrying value of Wet'n'Wild in Sydney, to be recognised in its accounts for 2016/17.

"The Australian theme park operations continued to be significantly impacted by the tragedy," Village Roadshow said in a statement on Tuesday.

Earnings from the company's cinema division, which consists of Village Cinemas, Gold Class and Vmax, are also expected to be lower than last year's all-time record of $82 million.

The group expects to post a net profit before material items and discontinued operations of between $20 million and $30 million, down from $50.9 million in the previous year.

Shares in Village Roadshow initially dropped about one per cent following the company's announcement, but rebounded to close 1.75 per cent higher, up seven cents at $4.07.
