A train has derailed near the northern Italian city of Bolzano, killing up to eight people, according to Italian broadcaster RAI.
Reports varied of how many people were injured, with RAI reporting that up to 70 people suffered injuries, some serious, as a result of the derailment.
The accident happened at around 9am local time after a landslide near the smaller town of Merano, rescuers say. The train reportedly then rolled part of the way down an embankment, but was held by trees.
Ambulances and rescue crews are working to find those trapped in the wreckage.
The railway line, inaugurated in 2005, is considered one of the most modern tracks in the country, according to the ANSA news agency.
The city of Bolzano is situated near the Austrian border, in the mostly German-speaking South Tyrol region.
