Travis Head in the mix for Test debut

Steve Smith has been impressed with Travis Head's approach, saying South Australia's skipper could put his name up there in the Test selection debate.

Opposing skipper Travis Head is one of many players who Steve Smith will be studying in NSW's Sheffield Shield opener.

Smith will don the baggy blue on Friday, when his side face South Australia in a day-night clash at Adelaide Oval.

The star batsman is keen for a big score and big win in his return from a minor shoulder injury.

But, much like national coach Darren Lehmann who will be in the stands, he is also already thinking about the Test XI that will face England in next month's Ashes opener.

South Australia captain Head is one of many candidates for the No.6 spot. A century against Test bowlers Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon would be an impressive way to bolster his bid.

"He's a good young player and he's done a really good job with the South Australia team, making the finals the last couple of years in both forms of cricket," Smith told reporters in Adelaide.

"He's got a good head on his shoulders. He wants to improve.

"He's certainly one that can put his name up there with some big scores."

Smith noted the list of candidates for the No.6 position was long.

"It's a good opportunity for a few guys to make some big scores and really demand selection," Smith said.

"Everyone is a chance if they are putting performances on the board.

"There is a bit of pressure on for spots and we want to see guys play well."
