Trbojevic keen but early return unlikely

Tom Trbojevic is desperate to get back into full training from a hamstring injury but the Manly star won't be back before round three of the NRL.

Manly lock Jake Trbojevic says his frustrated brother Tom keeps pestering medical staff about returning to training but the star fullback won't be back on the NRL field before round three.

The NSW State of Origin flyer is recovering from a grade-one hamstring tear after limping off in a pre-season trial against Cronulla last month.

In his place, Gold Coast recruit Brendan Elliot is set to fill in at the back against the Wests Tigers and Sydney Roosters.

"The physios get sick of him whingeing and that sort of thing," Jake Trbojevic told reporters on Monday.

"He's trying to push it and get out there and run on the field so he can put his best foot forward to play the first game but he won't be there.

"Obviously they've got to try and get him out there for the long run and have him out there for the better part of the season."

Tom last week lamented the likelihood of a round-three return against the Warriors.

"It's a bit slower than I would like; it's disappointing to miss the opening rounds," he said.

"I definitely won't be pushing it to come back early. It's only early in the year. I'll be getting it right and I don't think that will be done before round three."

Winger Reuben Garrick is expected to be handed his NRL debut when Des Hasler unveils his first Manly side on Tuesday since returning to the club, with Dylan Walker stood down.

After pre-season knee injuries to Kelepi Tanginoa and Taniela Paseka, backrower Corey Waddell is a chance of a debut too after moving from Penrith.

The biggest point of contention will be at five-eighth, where the loser in the battle between Trent Hodkinson and Kane Elgey will likely land a bench spot.
