Treasurers' commentary on GST deal

Treasurers from NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania have called on the federal government to put a guarantee into new GST legislation.

AFTER A MEETING OF STATE, TERRITORY AND FEDERAL TREASURERS, HERE'S WHAT SOME OF THEM HAD TO SAY:

GST REFORM:

* "We don't want to run a separate set of books. We want to run a new system which will be bedded down in legislation." - federal treasurer Josh Frydenberg

* "At the very least live up to the words of the paraphernalia, the documentation, that you've put into the public domain and make sure your guarantee is a real one and not just a set of economic baloney." - Tim Pallas, Victoria

* "It is only fair as a result of any change to the GST that no state or territory be worse off and the only way that can occur or that we can have confidence in that, is in circumstances where that clause has been put through legislation." - Dominic Perrottet, NSW

* "South Australia will not support the Commonwealth's legislation unless there is an amendment to put the guarantee in place." - Rob Lucas, South Australia

AXING THE TAMPON TAX

* "Common sense has prevailed and this reform led by the federal government is long overdue." - federal treasurer Josh Frydenberg

* "All the states and territories have agreed to remove the GST from female hygiene products ... that is something we've supported for some time and that has been a very successful outcome." - Dominic Perrottet, NSW

* "As an Australian woman I am very ecstatic that the treasurers of this nation decided to remove GST from women's sanitary products. This is a move that's long overdue." - Jackie Trad, Queensland
