Tributes have flown in after legendary Bollywood actress Sridevi Kapoor died from a heart attack in Dubai on Saturday.

The 54-year-old was one of the biggest names in Hindi cinema, with a career spanning more than four decades.

The death of Sridevi, reportedly while attending her nephew's wedding, prompted an outpouring of grief from politicians, fellow entertainers and sportspeople.

"Saddened by the untimely demise of noted actor Sridevi," Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter.

"She was a veteran of the film industry, whose long career included diverse roles and memorable performances. My thoughts are with her family and admirers in this hour of grief."

Actress Priyanka Chopra tweeted: "I have no words. Condolences to everyone who loved Sridevi. A dark day. RIP".

Former co-star Kamal Haasan said on Twitter that India "had witnessed Sridevi's life from an adolescent teenager to the magnificent lady she became. Her stardom was well deserved".

While cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar said: "we all grew up watching her and suddenly to hear that she is no longer with us is hard to digest".

There have also been public displays of grief and affection including sand sculptures of the actress.

Sridevi was born in the southern state of Tamil Nadu and made her acting debut at the age of just four.

She worked in India's regional Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam-language films before making her Bollywood debut in 1979.

Sridevi's most famous films included 'Mr India', in which she played a reporter and 'Chandni', where she played a woman choosing between two loves.

She stopped acting after her marriage to film producer Boney Kapoor but returned to the screen in 2012 with English Vinglish, about a woman learning English.

Sridevi is survived by her husband and their two daughters.
