British Prime Minister David Cameron has paid tribute to murdered British MP Jo Cox, describing the mother-of two as a "great star."

The 41-year-old was shot and stabbed outside a constituency meeting in northern England on Thursday and later died of her injuries. A 52-year-old man has been arrested and detained.

Following news of the death, Prime Minister Cameron described Ms Cox as a "great, campaigning MP with huge compassion, with a big heart."

Political leaders from around the world also tweeted tributes:
Gabrielle Giffords, a US politician who was shot while campaigning in Arizona in 2011, paid tribute to Ms Cox and called on the "coarseness" in politics to stop.
Ms Cox, a former aid worker, was only elected to parliament last year but had already made her name campaigning for the government to do more to aid Syrian refugees and for Britain to stay in the EU.

Her husband, Brendan Cox, released a statement on Thursday evening saying:

"Today is the beginning of a new chapter in our lives," he wrote. "More difficult, more painful, less joyful, less full of love. I and Jo's friends and family are going to work every moment of our lives to love and nurture our kids and to fight against the hate that killed Jo.

"Jo believed in a better world and she fought for it every day of her life with an energy, and a zest for life that would exhaust most people.

"She would have wanted two things above all else to happen now, one that our precious children are bathed in love and two, that we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her. Hate doesn't have a creed, race or religion, it is poisonous
