A body which was found floating near a boat ramp in Terrigal on New South Wales' Central Coast has been identified as that of a 56-year-old woman.

Fishermen made the discovery on Tuesday morning about 150 metres away from the popular Terrigal Haven boat ramp, police said.

The woman's family has not given police permission to release her name, but a number of media organisations have identified her as a well-known local woman.

A NSW Police spokesperson said it was "too close to call" whether the death was suspicious, but added that officers were looking to speak to anyone who may have information relating to the woman's death.

In one Facebook post, the alleged victim was described as a "kind, loving soul" with a love for dogs.

Another described her as a "lovely woman" who helped care for missing pets.

The boat ramp is located in a popular location known as Terrigal Haven, nearby busy lookout spot The Skillion.

The discovery comes three days after the body of another woman, 29-year-old Danielle Easey, was found floating in a creek, wrapped in plastic, an hour's drive away near Newcastle.

Strike Force Furzer has been established to investigate the death, which is being treated as suspicious.
