The death of an 18-year-old man who drowned in Sydney's Hawkesbury River has triggered an outpouring of tributes on social media.

Friends of Bailey Maher say the "cheeky, cheerful" Camden teen will never be forgotten.

Mr Maher went missing after jumping from a houseboat into the Hawkesbury River, near Lower Portland in northwest Sydney, on Friday night.

His body was recovered after a large-scale search on Saturday afternoon.

"Words cannot explain how hard it is to actually come to terms with saying you're gone," one friend posted on Facebook.

"The memory of your cheerful & cheeky personality will forever stay strong in everyone's hearts."

One young man said the pain of losing his best friend was impossible to explain.

"You were the closest thing I had to having a brother and will be dearly missed by all who loved you," he said.

A relative said her heart was broken for Mr Maher's distraught family.

"Pray for them to be able to cope with the pain of losing Bailey. So young to be gone too soon," she said.
