Tributes have poured in for rock 'n' roll pioneer Chuck Berry, who has died at his home near St Louis, Missouri, aged 90.
Among the celebrities to mark his death on Saturday was Ringo Starr with a heartfelt message which read: "R.I.P and peace and love Chuck Berry Mr. rock 'n' roll music".
The Rolling Stones tweeted: "There would be no Rolling Stones, without Chuck Berry. RIP, legend, and thank you."
Australian country star Keith Urban wrote: "RIP Chuck Berry!!!! Thank you for the poetry, the passion and the potency! GO JOHNNY GO."
The Twitter account managed by the estate of John Lennon tweeted out a quote: "If you had to give Rock 'n' Roll another name, you might call it Chuck Berry."
US singer-songwriter Huey Lewis, said Berry was "maybe the most important figure in all of rock and roll.
"His music and his influence will last forever."
Guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani and Randy Jackson, who thanked him for his life's work.
Jackson said: "To the greatest rock and roll pioneer of all time RIP chuck berry. we all thank u"
Guns N' Roses guitarist, Slash, said he was "heartbroken" by the news, and that Berry was "undisputedly the king."
Author Stephen King also hailed the rock great: "Chuck Berry died. This breaks my heart, but 90 years old ain't bad for rock and roll. Johnny B. Goode forever."
With songs like Maybellene, Roll Over Beethoven and Johnny B. Goode in the late 1950s, Berry helped lay the foundation for modern rock and was a major influence on scores of 1960s bands, including the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
Berry's death comes just months after the star revealed he was working on his new studio album, his first in 38 years.
He leaves behind wife Toddy and four children.
