As parents of an Australian teenager prepare to bring their son's body home from Bali following a fatal scooter crash, friends have posted tributes on social media to the 16-year-old.
Lochie Connaughton was holidaying with his parents in Kuta when he "lost control" of a scooter and drove into a concrete separator while driving out of the basement of the Marriott's Stone Hotel at around 10pm on Thursday, local police say.
The teenager's parents are expected to accompany his body on a flight to Sydney from Denpasar on Saturday night, Kuta police station chief Wayan Sumara said.
Billy Greatbatch, who says he is a "very close family friend" of the Connaughtons, from Orange in NSW, has raised more almost $52,000 via the site gofundme to help the teenager's family to return him home, as well as any other expenses that may arise.
Other tributes from friends have been posted in the past 24 hours, with Christopher Anderson saying "missing you so much bro, just wish I could wake up and it all of been a nightmare".
Wayan said on Saturday that Lochie had been found by hotel security in the basement lying face up.
"(His) nose was bleeding but there were no other wounds found to his body," he said.
"At that time, the victim was still conscious even though he was weak."
As he was being rushed to a nearby hospital, the 16-year-old vomited blood several times, Wayan said.
"He received treatment, but his life could not be saved."
Kuta police said Lochie and his friends were spotted by hotel staff walking from the lobby to the basement on the night of the accident.
He got on the scooter there but it is believed his friends were not on the bike when the accident happened.
It's understood Lochie was wearing a helmet and was not under the influence of alcohol when the crash happened.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing assistance to the family of an Australian who died in Bali.
"Due to privacy obligations we are unable to provide further information," they told AAP in a statement.
