Three drivers caught racing each other in inner Melbourne overnight have lost their wheels, police say.

Police saw a P-plate driver in a black Subaru sedan allegedly travelling at 97km/h in a 70km/h zone in Windsor about 12.30am (AEDT).

As they approached, they allegedly saw the car racing a Mitsubishi sedan and a Mercedes convertible at the traffic lights.

All three drivers had their vehicles immediately impounded for 30 days under the hoon legislation.

The drivers, an 18-year-old Balwyn man, a 22-year-old Kurunjang man and a 23-year-old Templestowe Lower man, are expected to be charged on summons with reckless conduct, driving at a dangerous speed, street racing and other traffic-related offences.
