Australian troops in Iraq are making a real difference in the heat a long way from home, Defence Minister Marise Payne says.

Fresh from a visit to meet with Australian defence personnel in Afghanistan and Iraq, the minister insists Australia has played a significant role in ensuring Iraqi security forces are able to take the fight to Daesh.

"It's hot, it's hard and it's a long way from home and family but they are very good at it and they are making a real difference," she writes about serving men and women in The Australian on Wednesday.
