Tropical Cyclone Stan intensifying

Severe tropical cyclone Stan, the first cyclone of the season for Australia, is forecast to bring winds of up to 200km/h to the Pilbara/Kimberley coast.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

What are Stan's movements?

- At 5pm on Saturday, category-2 Stan was about 170km north-northwest of Pardoo and 185km north-northeast of Port Hedland

- Moving southeast towards the east Pilbara/Kimberley coast at 7km/h

- Likely to cross East Pilbara coast early on Sunday near Pardoo, east of Port Hedland

What's it doing now?

- Producing sustained winds of 110km/h near its centre with gusts of up to 155km/h

How bad will it be?

- Predicted to intensify into a severe category-3 severe tropical cyclone on Saturday night

- Gales with gusts up to 100km/h likely to develop in coastal parts between Bidyadanga and Port Hedland on Saturday evening

- Gales at similar strength to extend to inland east Pilbara and adjacent interior districts on Sunday morning

- Could bring up to 150mm rain, flood warnings in place for the De Grey River, Pilbara Coastal Rivers and Fortescue River catchments.

Warnings?

- Yellow alert: Communities between Bidyadanga and Whim Creek including Bidyadanga, Sandfire, Pardoo, Port Hedland, South Hedland, Marble Bar and Whim Creek need to take action and get ready to shelter from a cyclone

- Blue alert: Broome and Bidyadanga not including Bidyadanga; and for the area bounded by Whim Creek, Munjina, Jigalong, Cotton Creek, Telfer and Bidyadanga including Nullagine, Telfer and Roy Hill but not including Newman need to prepare for cyclonic weather and organise an emergency kit including first aid kit, torch, portable radio, spare batteries, food and water

- All clear: People in communities between Whim Creek to Dampier including Roebourne, Wickham, Point Samson, Karratha and Dampier are advised that wind and storm surge risk has decreased.
